A cover for every type of manure storage
In the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Denmark and Germany it is required to cover all manure storage systems. Every silo must be covered with a roof or a floating deck. The cover obligation now applies to all manure basins.
Covering a manure basin serves to reduce ammonia emissions. You can opt for a constructive cover, such as a hood or a roof, but a floating cover is also allowed. A floating cover floats on the liquid and moves with the varying volume. A constructive cover has the advantage that no rainwater can enter the manure basin. A straw crust does not suffice as a cover.
