Many old basins from the 90s were constructed with PVC reinforced foil. The disadvantage is that this foil eventually ‘weathers’ and therefore becomes brittle and cooked.
The big advantage of a manure basin is that we can replace the top covers relatively easily with new, UV-resistant foil. This LDPE-a foil (or nowadays FPP KIWA foil) is unreinforced, but lasts longer and better in sunlight. Plus, after a few years it can still be welded and repaired.

Because the underlay in Drachtstercompagnie has never seen sun or rain, it is still as good as new. After the foil has been cleaned, we can weld a new foil and extend the basin by 13 metres.
After the underlay has been installed, the new upper cover is pulled over it and the slope covers are installed. All in all, a good day’s work, but the farmer can easily use the basin for another 20 years!
